What is custom made orthotics?
Custom orthotics are corrective devices designed to correct faulty foot biomechanics. They help
control abnormal foot function, re-establish proper weight distribution, and improve overall biomechanics. As such, over time they can help ease discomfort and pain in the foot, knees, hips and back.
How are Custom Made Foot Orthotics
Manufactured?
Following thorough evaluation, a neutral position foot mold is taken at our office and sent to our orthotic Lab where a positive cast is produced. Specially selected thermoplastics are vacuum heat molded to the patient's positive plaster cast. Modifications are incorporated to meet the patient's specific needs.
Who can Benefit from Orthotics?
Almost everyone! Even if you don't suffer from any obvious foot pain, you may have some biomechanical imbalances that could lead to problems later if left untreated.
Are Custom Orthotics Only for People with Foot Problems?
Many clinical conditions may be present without any obvious foot problems. Subtle imbalances in the foot are amplified as they go up the leg, knee, hip and back resulting in problems that may not have been properly assessed due to lack of a full biomechanical evaluation - for example, back pain not improving despite treatment due to the problem's location in the foot rather than the back.
Are Your Orthotics Custom-made?
Yes. Unlike one-kind-for-all inserts sold in shoe stores and other commercial locations, our orthotics are truly custom tailored to each individual patient's foot. We first perform a clinical biomechanical evaluation to determine whether correction necessary, and if so, the amount.
Next, a neutral position plaster foot mold is taken to yield a positive plaster cast. This causes no pain or discomfort, and is a very quick procedure.
Your orthotic is derived from this platform with the corrections necessary to address your specific situation.
Any orthotic dispensed without a complete biomechanical evaluation and neutral, non-weight bearing plaster cast, is not "custom".
Are Custom Orthotics Covered by Private Insurance Plans?
You may be covered under your existing insurance policy from work or Extended Health plan. If you are unsure about coverage under your specific plan, our reception staff can help you determine
this information.
How Long do Custom Orthotics Last?
With everyday use under normal conditions, you should get between 2-3 years of correction from your Custom Orthotics. Orthotic type as well as age, weight and activity level of the patient will play a role as well. Your orthotics should be checked periodically at our clinic to ensure they are still performing as required. Such check-ups are completed every six months at no cost if you received the orthotics from us.
Will Custom Orthotics Stop my Pain and Discomfort?
The proper use of these corrective devices should significantly reduce a patient's symptoms of foot
related pain and discomfort. In the case of some patients, conditions may be advanced or severe enough for the bones to have gone through osseous change. In such cases, pain or discomfort may not disappear entirely, however the orthotics will prevent further damage and promote soft tissue
restoration.
How Long will I Need to Wear my Orthotics?
Custom orthotics address the biomechanical cause of the condition. Think of your orthotics like prescription eyeglasses.
They correct alignment when they are worn.
